Nolan Townhouse

New York City
1990

Squeezing lightness, whiteness, and air into a wizened townhouse while maintaining the fiction of old world grace called for drastic renovation.

All new conveniences, mechanical systems, and finishes were fitted into, over and under the existing shell. A new entry level elevation, new rear elevations, and added alley windows all increase lightness. White terrazzo and pale mosaics further lighten the lower level.

The new two story kitchen and playroom addition is separated from the main house by a full width 30 inch shaft of skylight and glass flooring.

The parlor floor features 11 foot ceilings, arched windows and doorways and herring-bone white oak floors. New moldings and trimwork strive for grand scale but softened classical detailing. These cues are carries throughout the three living floors above. Except for the de rigueur mahogany panelled library sanctum, several shades of white washes over all surfaces.
