D&D High/Low House
East Hampton, NY
1991
Situated in a field punctuated by hardy cedars this very personal vacation house for two people is small spare, and informal. The two volumes, allow open camp-like room containing kitchen, dining, bed, bath, and study and a high cubic living space, reflect the program division between work and play.
The two forms collide at the entry, and remnant geometries outline north and south decks. A third form, the airy vaulted carport strikes an ultralight note in the landscape with an existing pool and guesthouse competing the composition.
The interior finish of the house consists of simple materials (plywood sheetrock, and fir) carefully arranged in colored layers and panels. Each building is individually detailed in shingles, siding steel and fiberglass. The juxtapositions of form and detail are meant to be both revealing and enlivening in their pleasant disharmony. All things in moder(n)ation.
