Hobbs Residence
Lawrence, NY
1988
Used as a weekend retreat, this house is a shingled giant in a shore neighborhood that has become relatively tight quarters over the years. Docked between two streets, the house shows a small curving public face on one street and a small private garage face on the next block. It is pushed as close to the north property line as possible to leave a broad expanse of lawn to the south. The long form is given direction by a pair of dormer gables and punctuated by one small and two large voids.
Inside an oak stair and cherry panelled wall lead under the master bedroom bridge to the double-height living room where quadruple-hung windows open seven feet to the summer breezes. Study, porches, dining room, kitchen, and (across the breezeway) maids room and garage fill out the first floor. Four bedrooms and four baths are upstairs.
It's an oceanliner with roomy cabins and salons sailing close to the city for easy cruising.
