Rod & Rich House
Callicoon, New York
1984
This project to convert the defrocked St. Aloysius chapel into a residence called for the grafting of the sacred and profane as hedonistic facilities were added to a hallowed space.
In an effort to maintain the spatial integrity of the chapel, it was left as an unaltered living space with only a new oversized fireplace replacing the pulpit and rood. Eating, washing, spa and garage facilities are trailed out behind the original building as a series of arcades. An interior pool, approached via a submerged and dimly lit ramp on axis to the fireplace, furthers the themes of water/light and fire/darkness.
Outside, the addition decreases in mass as it pulls away from the chapel with a diminishing gable roof. The arcade becomes more transparent and open, until it crashes into the vaulted garage and a final rest.
