Sister's House

Flint Hill, VA
1983

Mock sphinx pie: Take a ranch house (please). Cut in half. Add two pavillions. Fold in behind a looming wall of stone. Add a dash of pediment. Top off with timeless echoes of pyramid and sphinx. Voila.

Located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this house built for two elderly sisters, is part of a working sheep farm. It is linked by common elements in stone, roofing and detail to other structures on the property. The house is simply planned and executed. Set on the edge of a pasture, it is protected by a stone wall that grows from low fence to imposing facade.

A ranch house on the rocks, with a twist (please).
