Mere House

Located on 200 acres near the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this little house is the first of several buildings that will comprise a sheep farm. Working within a simple open plan, the architectural elements of stairs, columns, and beams define and order space.

The south facade is glazed for maximum solar gain and a 12" masonry stair wall serves as heat sink. Decks with distant views overlook the new pond, and a screened porch catches the setting sun.

Thematically, the house is a meld of revival temple on the hill and vernacular farm/mill. The tradition of Classic meeting Farm that seems to run in a direct line from Vicenza to Virginia has not been ignored.
